Wonderful Calathea rufibarba Garden Plant

Calathea rufibarba [which as of 2012 has actually been scientifically reclassified to Goeppertia rufibarba] is native to the rainforest understory of Brazil. It is also known as Fuzzy Feather or Velvet Calathea due to the soft, fine hairs that cover the leaves and petioles of the plant. Between possessing narrow, wavy green leaves with deep purple undersides, and getting taller than most other Calatheas, Calathea rufibarba is the perfect addition to any houseplant collection! Though rarely seen flowering while living indoors, when mature Calathea rufibarba will produce small yellow flowers.

The Marantaceae family is commonly known as “prayer plants” due to their circadian rhythmic nastic movement known as nyctinasty in which they move their leaves based on an internal circadian clock! This family contains genera such as Calathea, Maranta, Stromanthe & Ctenanthe.
