  • Description
Chinese photinia is an ornamental shrub, grown in gardens across the world. Recognized by its delicate white flowers and red-tipped leaves, it can also produce small berry-like red fruits that decorate your garden. As long as your chinese photinia is protected from strong winds and frost, it will remain happy and healthy.

Water and Hardiness
As it requires minimum attention once it has matured, chinese photinia is an excellent plant for gardens across the world. Chinese photinia is a surprisingly hardy plant which is suited to USDA hardiness zones 7-9. This shrub thrives in temperatures between 61 to 79 ℉, and can also withstand temperatures as low as 10 ℉ if protected from harsh winds. However, it will start to die if temperatures drop below this. Chinese photinia doesn't require much water and can tolerate drought rather than flooding.

Sunlight
The chinese photinia enjoys a sunny area which has partial shade, especially when planted in a hot climate. This is because the full sun can damage the plant when combined with continuously warm weather. If the environment is slightly cooler, then your chinese photinia will be able to withstand full all-day exposure to the sun. Tolerant of different conditions, it will still grow well in a shady location. However, insufficient sunlight will cause the leaves' color to fade.

Soil
The optimum soil for your chinese photinia is moist soil which is well-drained and fertile. While the chinese photinia can survive in both acidic and alkaline soils, the perfect pH value is around 6.5-7.5. As the chinese photinia has a flat root system that cannot root deeply for nutrient, adequate nutrients are required in the soil for its growth. A loamy soil is recommended, which will allow adequate drainage but still hold nutrients.

Care Guide Planting
Although the chinese photinia can be planted anytime throughout the year, it is best to plant it at the beginning of spring as this will allow the plant to settle and develop root systems before winter. Because the chinese photinia requires proper air circulation, make sure to plant your chinese photinia 2 feetfrom a wall fence and 2.5 feet apart from each other.

When planting your chinese photinia, ensure the planting pit is twice as large as the root ball. Before placing your chinese photinia into this hole, sprinkle in a handful of slow-release fertilizer as this will ensure later growth. After planting, make sure to water it regularly, such as once every few days, for the first month as the plant settles.

It is recommended to plant the chinese photinia in your garden, but however they can still happily grow in large containers (at least 1.5 footwide) as long as they can still access the nutrients which they need to grow. If planted in containers, a good tip is to first lay mulch before planting to ensure your chinese photinia gets all the nutrients it needs from the soil.

Water
One of the reasons that this plant is low maintenance is because once it has matured, it is drought-resistant so rarely needs watering to survive. One exception to this is if your chinese photinia is under two years old or if it is planted in a container, where it may need a little more attention. If this is the case, then water your plant once a week after checking that the first 2 inches of soil are dry.

If experiencing particularly warm weather without much rain, please check the substrate frequently. When 2 inches of the soil surface dry out, it is time for watering. Better to water your chinese photinia at ground level so avoid getting the water on the leaves to prevent fungus growth.

Fertilizer
Chinese photinia does not necessarily require fertilizing as long as the soil is rich in nutrients. That being said, fertilize your shrub twice a year is recommended, to encourage maximum growth and bloom. Fertilizer should be used at the beginning of every spring and winter. All-purpose fertilizer can meet the nutritional needs in most cases, while potassium-rich fertilizer applied in late summer will enhance the hardiness of chinese photinia.

Pruning
Left unpruned, chinese photinia will grow 1 foot each year, until it reaches an ultimate height of 13 feet and 12 feet wide. For this, you may prune your chinese photinia twice a year to a manageable height of 4 feet. Pruning your plant in spring and winter will also encourage the attractive red foliage which is loved by plant owners. The only exception to this pruning is that your chinese photinia should not be pruned in the first three years of its life.

When pruning, simply cut stems above a leaf node to keep the plant healthy. Chinese photinia can be an irritant, so make sure to wear gloves while pruning. Additionally, it will bloom in spring and summer with small white flowers, which may have a strong, pungent smell. They will then develop into red berry-like fruit that is poisonous to dogs, cattle and humans, so you may choose to pinch the buds before flowering to prevent this.

Propagation
Chinese photinia is one of the easiest plants to propagate from a cutting. Cuttings should be done in summer. Simply take three 3 inches cuttings from strong, healthy stems just below a leaf node. After removing the lower leaves, plant all three cuttings into 4 inches wide pot with 1.6 inch of soil. Once potted, allow the pot to sit in a bowl of water for half an hour to absorb water and then cover the entire plant with a plastic bag and keep in a shaded position.
