The name Eschscholtzia was chosen by the German romantic poet and explorer Adelbert von Chamisso (1781-1838) in memory of his friend and colleague Johann Friedrich von Eschscholz (1793-1831), during the scientific expedition carried out in California at the beginning of the 19th century.
